Follow the fish through the seasons
Crappie locations and techniques change with water temperature, lake level and weather. Use this as a starting point, then check a current fishing report before heading out.
Move toward shallow cover
As the water warms, look around protected spawning areas, stake beds, brush and creek-channel approaches. Jigs and minnows are longtime favorites.
Work deeper structure
Crappie often settle near deeper brush, ledges and channel edges. Trolling and controlled vertical presentations can help cover productive depths.
Track cooling water
Cooling conditions can bring fish toward creek channels and mid-depth cover. Watch bait movement and adjust depth as fronts pass through.
Slow down and go deep
Focus on deeper structure and channel-related cover. Slower, precise presentations are often a better match for cold-water fish.
Black and white crappie must be at least 10 inches, with a combined daily limit of 20 per angler. Regulations can change, so verify the current KDFWR rules before fishing.
